Whitehouse Institute of Design, Australia is pleased to welcome overseas students to its campuses in Sydney and Melbourne. You are an international student if you require a temporary stay or student visa to study and remain in Australia.
Whitehouse has a diverse student community with students coming from all over Australia and from various international destinations. It is advisable that international students are familiar with the entry requirements, course structure, tuition fees and Whitehouse policies before starting an application.

Whitehouse accepts direct applications only, meaning you can only apply to study at Whitehouse through our website. Once you have determined what kind of applicant you are, it is an easy 3-Step Process to apply:
- Fill out and submit the online application form and a Whitehouse representative will get in contact with you to discuss your application and how to map your journey from enrolment to application
- Once Whitehouse has all the necessary documents for your application, you will schedule an interview with us
- After you have completed your interview and supplied all of the required documentation, you will receive a results email within 24hrs
Bachelor of Design
International Applicant Background
The information below relates to applicants whose highest level of study enrolment since leaving secondary education is a VET course.
To be eligible for admission, applicants must have completed or undertaken studies in the following Australian Qualification Framework (AQF) programs at Whitehouse or another RTO:

- Certificate IV or
- Diploma or
- Advanced Diploma
Your application requires:
- The applicant to be at least 18 years at application
- Eligibility to apply for Student Visa or hold a Temporary Residency Visa with allowance to study
- Your latest Academic Transcripts (High School Report, Certificate of Education within Australian States & Territories such as VCE/HSC or Highest Qualification Achieved)
- Creative Portfolio (6-8 pieces in any medium)
- Motivational Statement (300 words)
- Proof of Identity and Citizenship (Passport or Birth Certificate)
- CV showing academic, professional and work experience
- English Proficiency
English Language Requirements
Depending on your educational background and country of origin, you may need to provide evidence of your English proficiency to be able to study at Whitehouse. It’s important to understand English well enough that you can comfortably cope with lectures, tutorials, studio classes and assignments. - Successfully completed previous studies in which the language of instruction, examination and assessment was in English, or
- Completed an English proficiency test - minimum English standard Academic IELTS of 6.5 (with no band lower than 6.0) or TOEFL 79 -93
Literacy Assessment
Applicants after adjustment, work and life experience applicants and/or International applicants who completed high school studies overseas may be required to complete a literacy assessment. This will take the form of a 1000 word written research task on a topic defined by the Academic Director. This is to support demonstrated academic research, analysis and writing skills in combination with the portfolio.
The following information is for applicants whose admission is based mostly on secondary education undertaken at school, TAFE or other VET or higher education provider (Australian or overseas equivalent) that was completed (or will be) in the current year or within the previous two years.
Applicants eligible for direct entry must have completed in the past 2 years or are due to complete in the year of application one of the following at High School in Australia, TAFE or overseas:
- Higher School Certificate (HSC) or TAFE Statement in HSC Studies or
- Victorian Certificate of Education (VCE) or Victorian Certificate of Applied Learning (VCAL)
- Certificate of Education within Australian States & Territories or
- International Baccalaureate (IB) or
- Equivalent overseas Senior School Certificate
An ATAR of 67.95 is desirable (OP equivalent of 15) if applying with a secondary education only but is not the only criteria for acceptance. An adjustment factor to the application will be taken into consideration if:
- Applicant has completed a Certificate III in Design Fundamentals
- There is evidence of disadvantage requiring an equity adjustment
If you are a year 12 student applying prior to official release of results, you will need to supply your most recent academic results (high school report or other). Whitehouse Institute can provide an early offer to applicants based on current academic performance. You are encouraged to apply early to secure your place with us. Enrolment will be confirmed upon satisfactory completion of your year 12 studies. If you are concerned about your ATAR, you are encouraged to contact Admissions to discuss your pathway.

- Eligible to apply for Student Visa or hold a Temporary Residency Visa with allowance to study
- Your latest Academic Transcripts (High School Report, Certificate of Education within Australian States & Territories such as VCE/HSC or Highest Qualification Achieved)

- Diploma in a design related field and a minimum of 5 years industry/commercial experience,
- Advanced Diploma in a design related field and a minimum of 3 years industry/commercial experience,
- Graduate Certificate in a design related field or,
- Graduate Diploma in a design related field
Your application requires:
- Academic records/qualifications,
- Project Proposal in your area of focus that includes project intention / outcomes and evidence of research or expertise in the field,
- Portfolio consisting of, or documenting, recent work relevant to the project proposal,
- CV showing academic, professional and work experience,
- Proof of Identity and Citizenship (Passport),
- English Proficiency,
- Eligibility to apply for Student Visa or hold a Temporary Residency Visa with allowance to study
As well as one of the above formal qualifications / work experience, you may have completed the following:

Advanced Standing (known as Credit or Recognition of Prior Learning) may be awarded to applicants who have completed courses in a similar field of study. Academic credit may be granted towards the completion of the Master of Design.

Depending on your educational background and country of origin, you may need to provide evidence of your English proficiency to be able to study at Whitehouse. It’s important to understand English well enough that you can comfortably cope with lectures, tutorials, studio classes and assignments. That's why our courses require a certain level of English proficiency. If English is not your first language, you will need to have either:
- Successfully completed previous studies in which the language of instruction, examination and assessment was in English, or

Whitehouse has a diverse student community with students coming from many different parts of the world to study design in one of the world’s most beautiful countries.

Academic Student Support - Course Advice
Logging into your Whitehouse Google Classroom will display your current course outline, assessments and what is expected from you in relation to that subject. If you have a question and need support from a teacher, the following options are available.
- Chat with your teacher through Google Classroom (Post a class comment, initiate a private chat)
- Arrange a time to meet with your teacher in person ( Email addresses for teachers are located in the “About” section of your Google Class).
- Make an appointment at Reception
- Meet with your Librarian for academic research, writing and English Language support
Whitehouse employs staff that come from a diverse range of backgrounds. Some of the languages we can speak are Arabic, Cantonese, Mandarin, Italian, French and Indian.

Whitehouse is a smaller higher education provider and we do not have the same on-site facilities as a university. We recognise that, Cultural Backgrounds and Languages need to be carefully considered for international student services. Career Advice
Because of our specialised field of Design, and the industry connections we have been building over the last 30 years, Whitehouse employs a full-time Industry Liaison Manager who is able to assist with Career Advice. This could be preparing a CV, mock interviews and advice on how to apply for a job.
