September 2009

We have returned for the final term of the year and there is a special buzz in the air, as the third year students prepare their final projects and get ready to make the transition to the "real world".

Over the past few months, Whitehouse students have been involved in a number of industry projects and competitions, many of which are detailed below, and our congratulations go out to them all.

And, while the students have been away on break, the campuses have been anything but quiet; from hosting workshops to industry event, there is never a dull moment at Whitehouse.

We look forward to seeing you on campus soon,
The Team at Whitehouse

NAB Divine 2009 Finals Luncheon

Australian Idol Judge Ian (Dicko) Dickson and Channel 10 Newsreader Helen Kapalos co-hosted the NAB Divine 2009 Finals Luncheon for the Ovarian Cancer Research Foundation at Whitehouse Melbourne Campus. In an effort to raise funds three hundred and fifty prominent women bid for a chance to dance with top AFL players including Richmond’s Nathan Brown, Collingwood’s Paul Lioccuria and Hawthorn's Trent Croad. The player auction was presented by the host of The Footy Show Garry Lyon.

Neighbours' stars Pippa Black and Ashleigh Brewer, fashion designer Linda Britten and Olympian Raelene Boyle were among the notable guests who enjoyed lunch and entertainment including a fashion parade of seasonal looks supplied by HUSK and live music while learning about the reality of ovarian cancer. The event was a great success with both money and awareness raised for a worthy cause.

Tessuti jumps to black

Congratulations to Ellie Wesseling, 3rd Year Fashion Design student who has taken out second prize in the Tessuti Awards 'Smart Day/Evening Wear' category. Ellie’s outfit was a unique sequin and lace jumpsuit, in black, silver and royal blue.

"The design, fabrication, pattern-making and construction of this complex garment places Ellie as ‘one to watch’ as she graduates from our course in February next year. " says Academic Coordinator, Melissa Laird.

Not just a one-point perspective

In an effort to encourage young designers to develop their interior drawing skills, Whitehouse Melbourne invited two groups of students to the campus to attend these complimentary workshops.

"The classes have been a great success, with many of the students showing improvements during the one-day workshop," says Interior Design Program Coordinator, Adele Winteridge.  "The students also gained an insight into what a career as an Interior Designer will be like, and how a Bachelor of Design can help them achieve that." she said.

Students learnt one-point perspective drawing and created pieces for inclusion in their portfolio, as well as discussing trends for summer 2009/10 and looking at the role of textile design.

Emma has Ants on her Pants

Luckily for Fashion Design student Emma Fong, the ants are on the outside of her pants.  Emma's "Ants Sleep Pants" were selected as the winning entry of the Sleep Wear range, a first for Launch Initiative. Launch Initiative Sleep enables fashion designers and graphic designers to try their hand at designing and graphic prints for pyjama fabrics.

"This is a great opportunity for young/student designers like me to kick off my dream career. It's nearly impossible for a non-established designer such as myself to get the chance to have my designs come to life and sold nation-wide.” says Emma.

Launch Initiative received over 100 designs from 12 different countries, so congratulations to Emma who's design are available for purchase online.

Seasoned Project Run-Aways

Project Runway season one contestants Lui Hon and Leigh Buchanan, took time out of their busy schedule in Melbourne last month to speak to the design students about life after Project Runway and breaking into the industry.

What was it like during filming on the show?
“It was so tough; you don’t realise before you go on the show that you’re going to give up music, television, and just the space to be by yourself – and you’re expected to be creative every day!” Leigh tells, “Lui was the Zen master. He was meticulous with his patternmaking while I just threw fabric on the floor and started cutting!”

What advice would you give design students?
Lui advised the students to work in retail for a few days; by keeping close to the customer, whether it is a mass or niche market, you are able to understand first hand what to design. Watch carefully how the boss does the buying and the display, and always ask yourself, does your design fit with your aesthetic?

When asked what their plans are for the future, Leigh spoke highly of his experience at Easton Pearson but would like to move into made to measure bridal.

Leigh closed by telling the students, “You’re in the beautiful world of Whitehouse now; the real world is tough, enjoy school while you can.”

Styling students of the one-week advanced 'Styling for the Professional Image' workshop had to research and pitch their designs to the class. The four best designs were chosen and then developed further in small groups.

The garments were constructed from paper and props the students brought in. A make-up artist was on-hand for consultation, and assisted on the day of the shoot.

Design Beginnings workshops will be running again in the January 2010 holiday period where students can enrol in a variety of workshops, including:
- Illustration for Fashion
- Techniques for Interior Illustration
- Personal Image & Life Styling
- Design for Sustainability

- Styling for the Professional Image

Sculpture by the Sea

Michelle Klisowsky, 2008 Whitehouse Interior Design Graduate will be exhibiting some of her latest work along the Bondi to Tamarama beachside walk as part of the 2009 Sculpture by the Sea festival. Some of Michelle's previous pieces of work received a 'Highly Commended' award at Melbourne's Fringe Festival.

Michelle's final year design project explored the beauty of sculpture. Each of the six shapes, made from 306 Grade strips of stainless steel sheeting, wraps and twists within itself creating points of intersection and a sense of enticement to lure in the observer.
