Whitehouse Founder, Leanne Whitehouse, contributed to the panel discussion ‘Fashionality - The influence of fashion on design and furnishings’ held as part of the DesignEx seminar series in April.
“What was really fascinating about the discussion was that it was multi-generational; talking about textures and balance and colour and domination; and about where design is going, with an ethical, green undertone,” Leanne commented.
Hosted by John Eussen, Eussen PR Consulting, panel members included industry icons Michael Fitzsimons, InStyle; Sibella Court, Society Inc of Home Made and James Marks, Raford Furnishings.

Production has commenced on the second series of FOXTEL’s award winning fashion reality series Project Runway Australia at Whitehouse Institute of Design in Melbourne.
After an extensive search across Australia, twelve of the country’s most ‘fabulous’ up and coming designers have been chosen.
“The designs I have seen so far in the new series are exceptional. There is so much untapped talent in this country and Project Runway Australia is all about finding it.” says series host Kristy Hinze.
For the twelve designers; the stakes are even higher for series two. As a massive nod from the local fashion industry, the winner of Project Runway Australia will now showcase their collection at ‘Rosemount Australian Fashion Week’ where buyers and career- breaking fashion commentators attend from all around the world. Holden are also proud to announce their involvement by providing the winner with a stylish Holden Cruze to drive home.
Project Runway Australia series two, produced by Fremantle Media Australia will premiere on ARENA on Wednesday 8 July 2009.
Holly Dishington, Designer for Abercrombie and Fitch
Written by Tessa Carroll, 2nd year Fashion Student
Holly told students her story of going from fashion student in London to landing a design position in Abercrombie - a name that has become synonymous with American youth and “casual luxury”.
Holly explained the brand philosophy which dictates; in order to design for the 18 - 22 year old target market, designers must assume their lifestyle aspirations. "From the moment you step in the door at Abercrombie headquarters, you are greeted with Abercrombie models. There is a scent of A & F perfume in the air and you design to blasting electronic dance music,” Holly says.
Holly gave great insight into the design and development process undertaken in a large company. Using the example of a jacket, Holly explained the process from brief to final product. This involved presenting the jacket to the CEO in competition against other design teams. Most of the time taken was to “tweak” the garment in order to get it down to cost before mass production.
Thank you to Holly for enlightening our students.
Sydney Styling students were inspired by the diverse range of potential career options presented to them by Colleen Cuneo, a former international model and founder of Cuneo Productions.
Colleen walked students down a visual pathway of event management, focusing on fashion and beauty events including runway parades and modelling competitions. Combining her modelling background with her company's involvement in these kind of events, Colleen developed a program that instils confidence in young models and explained to students the ethical responsibilities of the industry they are preparing to join.
Thank you to Colleen for her time and expertise.
Sequins, lace and sheer fabrics glimmered on the runway at The International Beauty Expo held in Melbourne during April.
Featured collections were designed by Whitehouse graduates Natalie Foran, Madelyn Blom, Kate Armstrong and Billie Whitehouse who will all be heading to Florence in August to study fashion at Accademia Italiana (www.accademiaitaliana.com).
“They did not fail to impress, with a range of stunning formalwear that would not look out of place on the catwalks of New York or Milan,” comments Jennie Kellett on StyleMelbourne.com.
A special thank you to our students who assisted backstage. It was a wonderful team effort!
