creative skills workshops are held at Whitehouse or your high school

fashion drawing & design / interior decoration / styling & design co-ordination / textiles & design for the HSC*

The highschool workshops are practical beginner workshops that introduce concepts in design and teach skills that are required in different design industries. The workshops have been developed to align with learning outcomes in the relevant syllabus subjects and are suitable for:

For Yr 7 & 8 students studying:

  • Technology (mandatory)
  • Visual Arts

or for Yr 9, 10, 11 & 12 students studying:

  • Design & Technology
  • Textiles & Design/Technology
  • Visual Arts/Visual Design
  • Drama (costume design)

Sessions range from one to two days and are scheduled by arrangement for group bookings only. Creative programs focus on Fashion, Interior Decoration, Styling & Design Co-ordination and Textiles & Design for the HSC* knowledge and skills, to quickly build learner confidence in their own ability to capture design ideas as industry relevant visual presentations.

Each student receives a Whitehouse Institute certificate on successful completion of the workshop. A scholarship to a 5 day introductory short course (summer or winter) will be awarded to the most talented student attending each high school workshop.

For the Sydney and Melbourne Metropolitan areas, minimum number of 20 students will apply for school visits. Outside Sydney and Melbourne, in regional NSW and Victoria, visits are available with a minimum of 40 students. A two day workshop is preferable, but 2 different 1 day workshops are also acceptable. Alternatively, we can host a workshop at our studio in either Sydney or Melbourne with a minimum of 15 students.

high school fashion drawing & design workshop

(1 or 2 day group bookings only)

Practical beginner classes that introduce figure drawing and presentation techniques for fashion design including:

day 1 : drawing the body and lead pencil rendering

  • Skills needed for a career in the design and fashion industries.
  • Discussion of the design process & ints relevance to the fashion industry.
  • Drawing the human body as a fashion figure discussing proportion and foreshortening, industry stylisation including hair, head & facial features and other details.
  • Drawing the face and facial details for fashion drawing.
  • Black and white rendering in lead pencil looking at tonal and textural illustration techniques.
  • Drawing garments on the body focusing on shape and how fabrics drape.
  • Presentation and layout ideas for design folios.

day 2 : colour rendering and technical drawing

  • Skills in analysing latest trends forecasted for fashion colours, fabrics and silhouettes. 
  • Design brief using a forecasted trend as inspiration.
  • Brainstorming for concept development & then ideas sketches that will translate into a 3 body range.
  • Communicating design through a coloured fashion illustration.
  • Rendering techniques of fabrics and texture with colour pencil applied to drawings.
  • Technical/production drawing.
  • Layout and design presentation for personal portfolios.

high school interior decoration workshop

(1 day group bookings only)

Practical beginner classes that introduce drawing of interior spaces, presentation techniques, colour and textile design for interior decoration including:

  • basic techniques for one point perspective drawing and interior object drawing
  • One point perspective drawing of an interior space (bedroom).
  • Rendering interior objects using lead and coloured pencil.
  • Appreciating colour theory and applying a palette to a drawing.
  • Drawing furniture to show light, shadow and texture using various rendering techniques
  • Skills needed for a career in architecture, interior design and interior decoration industries.
  • Layout and design presentation ideas for personal portfolios.

high school styling & design co-ordination workshop

at Whitehouse or your high school

(1 day group bookings only)

Practical beginner classes that introduce styling & design co-ordination including:

  • Overview of the styling industry and roles of a stylist.
  • Presentation of what styling is and how it is used in the media.
  • Identifying latest styling trends.
  • Styling a garment with a cultural influence and creating a make-up/hair styling board for a catwalk look.
  • Make-up Styling using rendering techniques.
  • Styling a garment with a cultural reference.
  • Skills needed for a career in fashion styling and fashion editing.
  • Layout & design presentation for personal portfolios.

textiles & design for the HSC *

(1 day group bookings only)

Ideal for Yr 11 & 12 students studying:

* textiles & design syllubus only

* available only November - March

Design Inspiration: How to generate creative concepts for inspiration for an MTP and understand how to evolve these into an innovative design. Presentation of ideas in the form of collage.

Visual Design Development: Process of refining design features/details. Illustration and rendering techniques, and mediums available to represent various fabrics and textures.

Manufacturing Specifications: Requirements for the product label, description, and technical production plans. Demonstration of production drawing.

Investigation, Experimentation and Evaluation: Students will see many examples of folios and presentation techniques to look at graphic layout, mounting, labelling etc.

NOTE: This workshop is specific to the Textiles & Design syllabus and is not suitable for Design & Technology students.
